Championship side. The Bradford Bulls appear to be in serious need of a new halfback.

Lee Gaskell tore his hamstring in the first round of the season, and Tom Holmes has yet to return to match fitness after cancer treatment.

As a result, the Bulls have only one first-team halfback, Jordan Lilley, who formerly played for the Leeds Rhinos.

In the lack of alternative choices, attacker John Davies has filled in with varied degrees of effectiveness, but the 33-year-old may need to revert to his natural role after both Zac Fulton and Chester Butler were forced off due to injury in their game against the York Knights.

After the game, head coach Eamon O’Carroll stated, “Whatever happened today changes nothing in terms of trying to look at who we might bring in or who’s coming back into contention for us.”

“We’ll keep looking at it, but we won’t react solely on the basis of this one defeat by simply getting the next man available before Widnes.

“We’ve got some good players in this group and Tom Holmes and Gaskell are not far off returning, but if we still have to keep looking into the transfer market, we will.”

With this in mind, here are some recommendations for who they may sign to alleviate their concerns.

Three potential Super League half-backs Bradford Bulls could sign

George Flanagan Jr – Huddersfield Giants

Flanagan came up through the Bulls’ youth systems, making his first-team debut at the age of 17, before joining the Giants ahead of the 2023 season.

A lifelong Bradford fan, he made his début with his father of the same name against the London Broncos, when he scored.

The kid played six first-team games for the Bulls, scoring four tries.

He’s also good at kicking.

Despite his preference for fullback, Flanagan can also play in the halves.

Dropping back into the Championship briefly may be essential for his progress.

Despite starting the first-team’s preseason games this year, he has been assigned to the Giants’ reserve squad.

When the Giants announced his signing, they referred to him as ‘the hottest young talent in rugby league’; he requires senior games.

Jack Farrimond – Wigan Warriors

Young Farrimond has made only one appearance for the Warriors this season, against the Super League’s worst team, the London Broncos.

He was Wigan’s 2023 Academy Player of the Year and performed admirably for Lancashire in their academy Origin victory.

He scored 11 tries in 12 games for the school last year and converted 71 goals, an amazing total.

Along with his academy accomplishments, he was a frequent member of the Reserves’ Grand Final-winning team last year.

In pre-season, he scored against Wakefield Trinity and Hull FC, demonstrating that he was more than capable of playing at the senior level.

After getting his first first-team squad number for the 2024 season, he may believe that playing regularly for Bradford Bulls in the Championship would be more beneficial to his growth than watching Wigan’s players from the bench.

Ugo Tison – Catalans Dragons

The Frenchman is currently on a short-term loan with the London Broncos, but if things don’t work out at Wimbledon, a move to the Bulls might be on the cards.

He made his professional debut in 2022 against Wigan Warriors, but has only appeared once in the Super League since then.

His debut, however, was excellent, as he shone in an 18-10 triumph over one of the Super League’s top clubs.

The 22-year-old, who can play half-back or hooker, is only on a two-week contract with the Plough Lane team, so he could leave after that.

When he signed his first professional contract, he said, “A dream has come true, and now it’s up to me to make it last as long as possible.

“I’m going to give everything as soon as I get the opportunity to play.”

Previously, loan moves to Toulouse Olympique and Wakefield Trinity aided his growth, so a move to Bradford Bulls may be viewed as another positive step for him, improving his future at Catalans.
