Liverpool’s European round-up: The Reds face more competition from Bayern Munich in the managerial market. Joël Matip is expected to leave on a free transfer.

Liverpool faces a daunting job in keeping its triple dreams alive following a 3-0 setback to Atalanta in the Europa League quarterfinals. The Reds were far from their best, and the Serie A side took advantage at Anfield.

Jürgen Klopp’s team has already turned around leads and will travel to Italy next week with the belief that they can do it again. Before that, however, attention returns to the Premier League title race.

Crystal Palace will visit Liverpool on Sunday, and the Reds know they need to win following a poor week that began with a draw with Manchester United.

Arsenal and Manchester City will be assured of three points this weekend as they visit Aston Villa and Luton, respectively. It means Liverpool cannot afford another slip-up at home after their Europa League defeat.

Here’s Liverpool.com’s view on some of the biggest headlines in European football today, including competition for a reported managerial target and a Reds stalwart’s summer exit.

Bayern Munich ‘discussing’ Julian Nagelsmann

Bayern Munich is reportedly considering rehiring Julian Nagelsmann as manager, amid speculation that he could take over at Liverpool. The German giants are also looking for a new manager this summer, with Thomas Tuchel poised to leave.

Both Liverpool and Bayern were interested in Xabi Alonso before he decided to stay with Bayer Leverkusen, and they are now looking at alternatives. The Telegraph recently stated that Germany manager Nagelsmann is a possibility for the Reds.

The 36-year-old led Bayern to the Bundesliga title in his debut season as manager, but was fired last season and replaced by Tuchel. His future as Germany’s manager is questionable, with his contract expiring after the European Championships.

According to Italian journalist Rudy Galetti, Bayern Munich officials are considering re-appointing Nagelsmann this summer as he continues to be evaluated by Liverpool.

According to Liverpool.com, Nagelsmann is a very promising young coach who was cruelly abused by Bayern. He will lead Germany into the Euros, but he has already expressed a desire to return to club football. It’s unclear whether he’ll return to Bayern Munich. He is a candidate for the Liverpool post, although other choices are still under consideration.

Joël Matip heading for Turkey?

Joël Matip, a Liverpool defender, is apparently pondering his next move as his contract expires at the end of the season. Matip is remains sidelined due to an ACL injury sustained in December.

He has been spotted running at the club’s AXA Training Centre in recent weeks, but manager Jürgen Klopp has confessed that the season will end too soon for the 32-year-old.

It appears like Liverpool supporters have seen the last of Matip in a red shirt, with Turkish newspaper Sabah reporting that he could be moving to Fenerbahce. According to the report, the Cameroon international has offered himself to the club but would need to establish his fitness before a deal can be agreed upon.

According to Liverpool.com, Matip has been a valuable asset to the club and is one of Klopp’s best signings. This season has been plagued, but it appears that a mutual parting of ways is unavoidable. He hopes to be fit again for the start of pre-season and to demonstrate his fitness to a new team.
