Rotherham awaiting ‘brutally honest’ assessment from Steve Evans

In an effort to map out a path for Rotherham United to return to Championship football, Steve Evans feels the Millers’ hard work has to begin immediately.

With goals from Tommy Conway and Scott Twine in each half, Bristol City defeated the long-relegated Millers 2-0 at Ashton Gate to increase their winning streak to seven games.

Conway’s foul in the 32nd minute gave the home team the lead after he had gone around goalie Dillon Phillips. For his 12th goal of the year, the striker stepped up to send Phillips the wrong way with a well-struck penalty.

Twine doubled the advantage with a superb 57th-minute free-kick, bent around to wall with his right foot from 25 yards.

Though clearly second best on the day, Rotherham rarely threatened and stuck to their assignment with a game face.

Following a lackluster campaign, newly reinstated manager Evans announced that he was drafting a report for chairman Tony Stewart outlining the club’s best course of action.

Evans remarked, “I am confident that we can bounce back next season, but this is one of the biggest challenges I have taken on.”

“I’m working on a document that will outline my goals and strategies for getting us back into the Championship for the chairman.”I shall be brutally honest, as that is what he wants. Next week, I will deliver the document, and then the real work will start.
Evans questioned the penalty call, but he also acknowledged that the result could not be disputed by his squad.

“Today, we were definitely not the best. Although Bristol City outperformed us technically, he was pleased with his players’ commitment to their work.

“Tom Eaves had a great chance to open the scoring. They will say their goalkeeper made himself big for the save, but it was a key moment because goals change games.

“I would like to have seen how we performed if taking the lead. But it wasn’t to be and then the referee has made a mistake for the penalty.
