Shocking: Outrage at Preston North End as Emil Riis Goal Controversially Disallowed Against Burnley

In the early moments of Saturday’s Lancashire derby, an offside call confused Preston North End supporters.
In five minutes at Turf Moor, the Lilywhites had the ball in the back of Burnley’s net. Emil Riis, who had replaced Milutin Osmajic in the starting lineup, was set up by Preston captain Ben Whiteman with a swift free-kick.

The linesman promptly raised his flag as Riis raced on to the ball and struck a thundering first-time effort into the bottom left corner. Replays quickly revealed that the goal should have stood, nevertheless, as the match was televised live on Sky Sports. Fans of North End were horrified by the choice.

@JoshGardy responded on X, formerly Twitter, saying: “This is spot-on!” ranting. Nicely executed free kick.

@twitteringgoose: Riis is being kept onside by just three Burnley players.

@woodsy8793: Riis is roughly five miles ahead of that.

@TomHarrisonLaw: Your representatives are unfit to serve.

@AndrewAsh163: Three players, not just one, were playing Riis onside. Someone should submit that Lino to Specsavers.

@CasualsNorthern: A goal taken away. In agreement.

@TomSwinscoe: That was a shocking choice!

@pete_eccles: How is that incorrect? Onwards and forward!

@nycnorthenders: This is such a shame—he’s only off by a foot. Whoa.
