Wolves statement after two players arrested over rape allegation

The two Premier League players who were detained over the weekend on suspicion of rape and assault are not, according to Wolves, part of their team.

The two 19-year-old footballers, who are on the same Premier League squad, were questioned by police before being granted bail.

It is believed that both players have been suspended by the Premier League team while a police investigation is ongoing.

According to a police spokesperson, “two men have been arrested by officers in connection with a reported rape.”

‘A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape. A second 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape.

Following a wave of specialtion on social media, Wolves released a statement on Wednesday denying that it is two of their players who are involved.

‘A newspaper article published yesterday has triggered inappropriate online speculation over the identities of two individuals reportedly under police investigation,’ Wolves’ statement read.

‘Whilst we would not typically comment on ongoing police matters, in order to protect the welfare of our young players, we feel it is necessary to confirm that the allegations to not relate to anyone at Wolves.’

‘Both men have since been released on police bail.’

In 2022, the Premier League mandated that teams provide sexual consent education to all employees and players.

It came after a run of events involving Premier League players, including as Benjamin Mendy and Mason Greenwood.
