Wolves’ Manager fined £8,000 and banned one game for referee outburst.

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil has received a one-match touchline ban and an £8,000 fine for his outburst at a referee after a 2-1 loss to West Ham on April 6.

O’Neil called the decision to disallow Maximilian Kilman’s stoppage-time goal “possibly the worst decision I’ve ever seen” and was charged with improper conduct by the Football Association.

It was due to his behavior towards referee Tony Harrington, who was asked by the VAR to check the monitor after Wolves replacement Tawanda Chirewa was deemed to be impeding West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski before Kilman scored.

O’Neil accepted the charge and will therefore be absent from Wolves’ dugout when they travel to the Etihad Stadium to play Premier League title contenders Manchester City in the Saturday teatime kickoff.

A Football Association statement read: “Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O’Neil has been suspended for one match and fined £8,000 during the Premier League encounter against West Ham United on Saturday, April 6, 2024.

“It was alleged that after the game, his language and/or behaviour in or around the match officials’ changing room was inappropriate and/or threatening.”

“Mr O’Neil admitted the charge and the sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent regulatory commission.”

Following the game, O’Neil revealed that he went to meet Harrington when the final whistle blew.

But O’Neil said the chat “didn’t go well” since he was still upset about the incident.

In the most recent episode of ‘Match Officials Mic’d Up,’ referees’ chief Howard Webb believed the correct decision was reached.

“If you stay in that offside position right in front of the goalkeeper, you’re going to have an impact,” Webb told Sky Sports. “Most goalkeeping people I’ve spoken to at least expect this to be penalised.”
