Wigan Midfielder seeks positives from season, aims for strong finish.

Sean Clare is looking forward to building on the season’s successes.

Latics most recently left the capital with a point after a hard-fought 2-2 draw with Charlton, with Charlie Kelman scoring twice on the 450-mile journey.

While Clare believes that safety is a benefit, he stresses that the team wants to end the season strong with three games left.

“I think the staff and the players have to take credit, and the fans,” she remarked.

“Getting to where we are has required a real team effort.

“I believe it can appear a little worse than it is because we are aware of the quality that we have, how excellent we can be, and that there are some results that we could have done better on that would have moved us up the table.

“But when you consider the minus eight points and not having much money to spend during the summer, it’s been good.

“A lot of the younger players have come in and done extremely well, and I believe it is a fantastic season that can be built upon.

“But I don’t think we can rest on that. We have games left; we need to finish as strong as possible while also learning from our mistakes this season in terms of consistency and so on in order to really push on and move forward.”

Clare missed the goalless draw with Port Vale and was on the bench in the defeat to Cambridge United, but he returned to start against his former team at The Valley.

However, manager Shaun Maloney concedes the 27-year-old is doubtful for Saturday’s trip to Lincoln City.

“I’ve been working hard, obviously I’ve not been in the team recently, I’ve been in and out for different reasons,” she remarked.

“But you have to back yourself, you have to be ready when called upon and I was happy that I could help the team in any way I could and hopefully I can continue staying in the team and helping.”
