West Ham nears first summer signing in £18m deal

West Ham United are reportedly “close” to signing Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney, according to The Red.

According to a Teesside radio station on May 2, the 21-year-old’s fee could be about £18 million.

Hackney’s season has been hampered by injury, but he has impressed enough to warrant interest in his services.

Could Hayden Hackney be a long-term star at West Ham United?

Hackney broke into the Middlesbrough first team last season after a loan spell with Scunthorpe United, and he quickly established himself as a regular starter after making his Championship debut against Birmingham City in October 2022.

He made 38 appearances in all competitions that season and began this season as a regular in the squad, but injury has limited him to only 28 games.

If there is one warning indicator when assessing a prospective trade for Hackney, it is his injury history this season and how he recovers from it – however it is tough to determine whether this is just one injury-plagued season or the start of a recurrent problem.

However, what Hackney has to offer makes it tempting to hope for the best in terms of his fitness.

This season, the 21-year-old has made 9.29 progressive passes, 9.94 passes into the final third, and 58.05 carries per 90 minutes in the Championship.

The young midfielder’s unwavering positivism on the ball, as well as his fearlessness and willingness to take on responsibility despite his youth, are what make him such an interesting prospect.

If Hackney does join West Ham and is fit, he will undoubtedly be valued by whomever manager is in charge.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers seek to sign a European “wonderkid” whose club is willing to authorize a trade.
