Indeed, there has been discussion of a major redevelopment at St James’ Park following a difficult season at times.

It remains to be seen whether Eddie Howe will be able to entirely restructure his squad due to FFP constraints, but it appears that the defence will be looked at.

The signing of a central defender was also expected last summer, but the transfer budget did not allow for it.

As a result, the club is thought to have considered options there even before the long-term injuries to Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles.

In an effort to save money during the FFP saga, it appears the club is going to the free agent market.

Two players in that market are said to be interested in moving to St James’ after conversations.

The two players keen to sign for Newcastle this summer

According to writer Joel Bland on X, formerly Twitter, Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo and Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly are both willing to join Newcastle.

Talks are thought to have gone smoothly with both soon-to-be free agents, however agent fees may still be an issue.

However, there is an anticipation that the transactions will go through.

“Both players are keen to join #NUFC, informal talks have taken place with both their representatives,” Bland tweeted.

“Agent fees the only ‘worry’ as such for both, still expect a deal to be negotiated though.”

Newcastle could have rebuilt their defence without spending a penny

Bringing Kelly in seems quite prudent. Howe has already stated that he loves versatility, and the 25-year-old can play both central defence and left-back.

Given the injuries and Dan Burn’s occasional struggles at left-back, while Lewis Hall continues to grow, it appears to be a no-brainer.

Adarabioyo, on the other hand, is a more traditional center defender who has been dubbed “special” by manager Marco Silva, demonstrating how highly valued he is at Fulham.

Being able to outbid other teams for his services seems like a triumph.
