Swansea City goalkeeper Carl Rushworth is being considered for Gareth Southgate’s England Euro squad, according to The Mirror.

The 22-year-old joined the Swans on loan from Premier League club Brighton before of the 2023/24 season and has been quite impressive, despite playing in a team that has fallen to the bottom of the table.

The goalkeeper has been named one of the Swans’ best players this season, and he has previously excelled on loan at Walsall and Lincoln City.

While it is uncommon to see Championship players nominated to the England squad, it is not unheard of, and Rushworth has an edge because Swansea’s goalkeeping coach, Martyn Margetson, is also England’s goalkeeping coach, so he works with him every day and is aware of his abilities.

Carl Rushworth’s chances of being named in the England squad

Rushworth has risen in the pecking order for an England first-team call-up, with the European Championship only two months away.

Jordan Pickford is undoubtedly Southgate’s first-choice goalkeeper, but some of his typical backups are injured or failing to get regular action.

This implies that Southgate may have to select individuals he does not usually choose in order to name three goalkeepers in his group.

Aaron Ramsdale has dropped down the pecking order at Arsenal since David Raya’s arrival, and his form has been poor when he has been given limited opportunities to play.

Nick Pope has been sidelined since December due to an injury, and Sam Johnstone appears to be out for the remainder of the season.

Meanwhile, England U21 international James Trafford has been dropped by Burnley in recent weeks, putting Rushworth in a strong position to be named to the England squad.

Rushworth has played every league game for Swansea this season, and England goalkeeping coach Martyn Margetson is clearly satisfied with his efforts.

If the Swansea loanee isn’t called up to the England squad this summer, you have a feeling he’ll be engaged with them in the future, given Rushworth’s obvious talent.

Carl Rushworth’s 2023/24 season at Swansea City

Carl Rushworth has certainly been Swansea’s finest performer this season, and if the club hadn’t bought him, they could have ended themselves in relegation trouble.

This season, the 22-year-old has appeared in 45 games across all competitions for Swansea, conceding 65 goals and keeping 10 clean sheets.

Swansea’s defence has been fragile at times this season, particularly in the opening few weeks of Luke Williams’ reign, so Rushworth has had his hands full.

Rushworth is ranked in the top 10% of Championship goalkeepers by Fotmob in a variety of stats. Saves (137), goals avoided (3.90), and accurate long balls (261) are among the best in the competition.

It’s clear to see why England’s management is so interested in Rushworth, and you wouldn’t bet against him joining the England squad soon.
