Sunderland midfielder Corry Evans will leave the club on a free transfer this summer, according to Football Insider sources.

Evans, 33, is out of contract at the Stadium of Light in June of this year, and the Black Cats have notified him that they will not exercise the 12-month extension option included in his contract.

The Northern Ireland international is now free to join a new club before becoming a free agent in July.

Evans has battled his way back to fitness after suffering an ACL injury in January 2023, making three substitute appearances since returning in March.

The former Manchester United teenager is set to play for Northern Ireland in June friendly against Spain and Andorra to improve his match fitness.

Corry Evans enjoyed mixed time at Sunderland

Evans has had a mixed career at Sunderland, having had a highly successful first season before suffering an injury last year.

Former manager Lee Johnson named the central midfielder captain after he arrived at the Stadium of Light in 2021, after spending eight years with Blackburn Rovers.

After leading the team earn promotion in his debut season, he was sidelined the next season due to a knee injury.

The Northern Irishman had more than a year to recuperate from that blow, which basically ended his stint at the Stadium of Light.

Evans will now try to use the next internationals to demonstrate his health and show any interested parties that he still has a lot to give.
