Southampton’s move shakes up Leeds United’s promotion bid.

Southampton have returned to automatic promotion contention with a convincing 3-0 victory over Preston North End.

After 19 minutes, Che Adams completed a well-worked move to give the Saints the lead. Adams completed his brace just ten minutes later, linking up brilliantly with David Brooks to sneak the ball beneath the onrushing Freddie Woodman.

Preston were quickly eliminated from the game as a half-clearance fell to Stuart Armstrong, who curled home to seal the victory before halftime. Southampton’s performance on the South Coast throws another twist to Leeds United’s already tumultuous promotion chase.

The Whites appeared to be locked in a three-way contest for automatic promotion alongside Leicester City and Ipswich Town. However, all three favourites have slipped in recent weeks, allowing the Saints to catch up.

Their victory on Tuesday night brings them to 84 points, just three behind Leeds, who are third. Russell Martin’s side also has a game in hand on the Whites, which might bring them level on points, but they are likely to finish fourth due to Leeds’ better goal difference.

Southampton are the in-form team in the promotion race, and they could well fancy their chances of beating Leeds, Leicester, and Ipswich to the top two. The Saints still have to face the Foxes at the King Power Stadium next Tuesday, and they will go to Elland Road on the penultimate day of what promises to be an incredible regular Championship season.
