Southampton: Juventus set for key transfer talks

Carlos Alcaraz’s agent is in Italy and is scheduled to discuss the Southampton player’s future with his loan club Juventus.

According to Tutto Juve, Alcaraz’s agent, Sebastian Lopez, was present for the team’s Coppa Italia final victory over Atalanta on Wednesday evening.

Alcaraz joined the Serie A club on loan in January, with a €49.5 million (£42.5) option to buy.

With the season coming to an end, he will need to make a choice on his future in the weeks ahead.

The Argentine was an unused replacement in Juve’s 1-0 win over Atalanta in midweek, as the club won its 15th Italian Cup.

Carlos Alcaraz transfer latest

Lopez will speak with Juventus about the club’s plans for the playmaker’s future.

The agent is thought to have met with the Italian side’s hierarchy on Wednesday, though if they were unable to meet before to the final, a meeting is expected this week.

Alcaraz has made ten appearances for Juventus in all competitions since joining the Italian club in January.

A hamstring injury in March sidelined him for a month, but he still made eight Serie A appearances, with two league games remaining.

There has been no formal decision on his future, and it may yet be determined by what happens with manager Max Allegri.

It is thought that the top tier club has no plans to use the option to buy provision negotiated with Southampton during the winter transfer window.

However, Juve is in talks with the Saints about extending the loan until next season.

It remains to be seen whether the Hampshire club can be persuaded to agree to such a contract, and their decision may be influenced by their league status for next season.

Southampton’s promotion push

Russell Martin’s team might yet achieve promotion to the Premier League by competing in the Championship play-offs.

A return to the top flight might have a significant impact on their ambitions for the 21-year-old, who failed to find consistent playing time in the second tier before to his move.

Prior to joining Juventus, Alcaraz made 23 league appearances, 13 of which were starts.

Southampton finished fourth in the table, earning a spot in the post-season promotion shootout.

The Saints face West Brom in the second leg of their semi-final on Friday, with the winner facing either Norwich City or Leeds United for a place in the Premier League.

Another loan move doesn’t add up for Southampton

If Alcaraz has a future in Martin’s first-team plans, there should be no talk about another loan move to Juventus.

But if the Saints are open to a trade, they should look to sell permanently this summer and move on from the Argentine at this point.

Given his age, talent, and quality, there will be plenty of demand in his services, thus he should find a place in the forthcoming transfer market.

If Juventus cannot afford a permanent transfer, renegotiating another loan move does Southampton no favors.
