Preston North End and Championship rivals in three-way battle for £10m star.

Preston North End have been linked with a move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien.

Alan Nixon, an EFL journalist for The Sun, stated on his Patreon page that North End is interested in acquiring O’Brien but faces competition from two Championship opponents. O’Brien has spent the season on loan at Middlesbrough, and the club would like to keep him at the Riverside Stadium, but Sheffield United, who were relegated last week, are also interested.

Nixon added that the Lilywhites would consider O’Brien as a possible replacement for Alan Browne, who could leave Deepdale this summer. The club captain has been offered a new contract but has yet to accept it, and his saga will continue for at least a week as Ryan Lowe meets with those out of contract.

O’Brien appeared in 25 games across all competitions for the Boro, assisting once. He was out from October to mid-January due to a fractured tibia and ankle damage. He recovered from the injury and continued to play regularly.

The left-footed central midfielder has two years left on his Nottingham Forest deal, having joined the club for £10 million in the summer of 2022 alongside Harry Toffolo. Forest won huge over Burnley at the weekend, moving three points clear of Luton Town with two games left in the season. If they stay up, O’Brien might be loaned out again, although relegation to the Championship may prompt them to keep him.

Preston look most likely to strengthen in central midfield, with numerous players connected to the club in recent weeks. Brighton’s Marc Leonard and Exeter City’s Reece Coles have both been heavily linked with moves.
