The League One duo Oxford United and Lincoln City are allegedly interested in signing Dunfermline Athletic defender Josh Edwards during the summer transfer window.

According to Football Insider, the 23-year-old has previously received attention from England.

Edwards joined Dunfermline in the summer of 2019, coming from fellow Scottish Championship side Airdrieonians.

Since then, the defender has made 178 appearances in all competitions for Dunfermline, scoring nine goals and assisting 24 times.

However, when interest from other sources surfaces, it appears that he may be able to relocate south of the border this summer.

League One clubs in Edwards race

According to the most recent update, both Oxford and Lincoln want to sign Edwards at the end of the season.

The 23-year-old’s efforts in the Scottish Championship this season are reported to have piqued the interest of both teams, and a move might be imminent.

Another League One club, Barnsley, reportedly had an offer for Edwards rejected during the January transfer window.

As things stand, the defender’s contract with Dunfermline will expire at the conclusion of the season. However, his current team has the option of extending the contract for another year.

As a result, clubs interested in Edwards anticipate he will cost roughly £100,000 this summer.

Despite his natural position as a left-back, the 23-year-old has also played on the left side of midfield and at centre-back this season.

Oxford and Lincoln still chasing promotion

Both Oxford and Lincoln will want to compete in the Championship next season.

Oxford are presently sixth in the League One table, with Lincoln behind by one position and two points with four games remaining in the regular season.

That, of course, implies that both remain in contention for promotion to the Championship via the play-offs.

Oxford play Peterborough United at The Kassam Stadium on Saturday afternoon, while Lincoln face Wigan Athletic at Sincil Bank.

A potentially good signing for Oxford or Lincoln

There may be a case that Edwards’ signing would be beneficial to either of these two parties.

Joe Bennett’s contract with Oxford expires in the summer, and Lincoln are already short on left-back options.

The purchase of Edwards might thus offer one of these clubs with much-needed depth on the left side of their defence.

Meanwhile, his versatility and ability to play other roles may add another depth to these two sides.

Given his contract position, it appears that Edwards may be an affordable target for one of these two clubs, especially if they win promotion to the Championship.

With all in mind, it appears that these two parties may be reasonable in preparing to make a summer lunge for the Dunfermline man, especially as they will not want to be outdone by the other in the race to win his services.
