Northampton Defender wants contract extension

Cobblers defender Jordan Willis wants to continue at Sixfields until next season, although talks over a new deal have yet to begin.

The 29-year-old defender joined Northampton on a short-term agreement in October before signing a contract until the end of the season in December, but his future beyond this summer is uncertain.

“The goal is to sign a new contract,” added Willis, who has made 26 appearances this season. “My first goal was to come in, play as many games as possible, and then earn another contract.

“I’m sure those discussions will take place in the summer, but for now, I’m focused on getting as many minutes in as possible before the season ends.

“To be honest, nothing has happened yet, but there is still time this summer to have such conversations. I like to avoid them, and my agency handles them, but there is plenty of time, and I am confident they will occur. “I want to stay.”

Willis returned from a month away, coming on as a second-half replacement in Saturday’s triumph over Carlisle United.

“It was good to be back out there, especially in a victory,” he said. “It’s never fun being out with an injury, but with the situation we’re in, there was no reason for me to rush back and take any chances.

“It was just a minor tear in my calf, that’s all, and I was able to take a bit of time and make sure I was 100 per cent right before returning, but now I’m back and I’m looking to play as much as possible between now and the end of the season.”
