Memphis Tigers receive significant NIL contribution from FedEx.

Since Name, Image, and Likeness arrangements became permitted for college athletes to cash in on their earning potential, numerous Group of Five universities have had to find inventive methods to compete with major programs that have much larger donor bases and networks to help fund NIL collectives.

One of the most notable Group of Five schools is ready to benefit from a significant cash windfall, as Memphis-based FedEx announced that it will launch a NIL program for University of Memphis student-athletes.

The firm will invest $5 million each year for the next five years in Memphis student-athletes to promote FedEx initiatives, with the first focus on football, men’s and women’s basketball, and more women’s sports.

“We evaluated the evolving NIL landscape, exploring how we can best deliver positive impact to student-athletes and connect them to meaningful opportunities for both themselves and the community and made the decision to reallocate marketing funds to a NIL platform,” said Brian Philips, FedEx’s vice president and chief marketing officer “This gives us an opportunity to invest in bright, young athletes in our great hometown of Memphis, strengthening our connection to the next generation of leaders.”

FedEx’s first formal NIL campaign was held on April 20 during Memphis’ spring game, featuring a pre-game tailgating.

“We are truly appreciative of the vision and support of FedEx’s leadership in this area,” said Laird Veatch, University of Memphis vice president and director of Intercollegiate Athletics. “NIL possibilities have become an important aspect of the student-athlete interaction, and we feel that large corporate sponsorship for NIL will be critical to the future landscape of collegiate athletics. We are certain that this historic contribution by one of the world’s most well-known and successful organizations will motivate others in Tiger Nation to recognize the value of investing in student-athletes and join the effort with further assistance.”
