Mason Mount is a player loved by coaches more than fans.
Gary Neville points out that the player Liverpool reportedly want to sign is not popular with fans
Gary Neville has claimed that alleged Liverpool target Mason Mount is a player loved by coaches more than fans.
Mount has been publicly regarded as one of Liverpool’s key transfer targets for the past few months. But it looks like strong links are now forming with Manchester United
Anyway, speaking to Sky Sports via Football Daily last night, Neville claimed he wasn’t surprised to see top managers like Jurgen Klopp and Erik ten Hag following Mount. However, he did point out that fans might not be as happy with the links.
“Mason Mount is a coaching player, I think that’s the best way to describe him,” said the pundit. “I’ve seen a lot of things in my life in football where they probably get more respect for their work from the coaching staff than maybe from the fans watching them.” Because their performances in the form of goals, assists, tackles or other really remarkable things maybe not as much as people would like.
“But what they do is keep the teams together. They fill in the gaps, they know when to press, win the ball and counterattack. So it doesn’t surprise me that Mason Mount is the target of many managers. I don’t think he would be a priority here [at Man United] but he [Erik ten Hag] wants midfielders.”
That’s a pretty accurate assessment of Neville. Frequently seen by Chelsea fans, the reaction to Mount paints exactly the picture the pundit describes.
Although he had an impressive goalscoring and assists record in the past, it’s not his main role in the team. A lot of what he does is off the ball to push the team higher.
In that regard, it really comes as no surprise that he is so closely associated with Liverpool. In the Klopp years, the Reds’ midfield has always been characterized by such players.
The likes of Gini Wijnaldum in particular were often overlooked and sometimes dismissed by impatient fans who wanted a glitzier production.
But as Liverpool have seen since Wijnaldum left, he is not an easy man to replace. Few can match his holding, pressing, tackling and work rate. It’s a rare ability. Mount can do it in spades, though.
There may be bigger, more glamorous names out there but the 24-year-old would be a job for Liverpool. There is no doubt about this. As a result, it’s a shame to see the Reds likely miss him. However, all is not lost yet. Jurgen could still get his Wijnaldum replacement. The fans may not like it, but the boss will surely like it.
