David O’Neill wants to write a David Raum article for Manchester United about TSG Hoffenheim.
Manchester United has entered the race to capture TSG Hoffenheim’s David Raum.
According to reports, the left wing-back has drawn interest from several Premier League clubs, including Manchester City. However, Sky in Germany claims that United’s main rival appears to be Borussia Dortmund.
He played in the second division of the German football pyramid just two seasons prior, they have recently become household names. Now that the World Cup is approaching, he could start for the German National Team.
This progress is greatly influenced by his creative output; in his first season in the top division, he contributed 11 assists and 3 goals for Hoffenheim last season. He generally participates in aggressive play, which is unusual for defenders. Only Thomas Muller of Bayern Munich outperformed the 24-year-old in terms of providing the final or penultimate pass prior to a shot on goal on 82 times during the previous campaign.
The attacking production of players like Joao Cancelo and Andy Robertson at rival teams has long made the Red Devils envy, but as the picture above illustrates, the left-hand side would be revitalized with such a deadly overlapper.
Dortmund was regarded as the heavy favorite to land Raum, but given that they have already added five first-team players to their roster this summer, it seems unlikely that they will be able to match Hoffenheim’s asking price of €40 million.
With left-backs Nico Schulz and Raphael Guerreiro still on the books and earning good money, there is also the question of space in the team.
Erik ten Hag of United simply needs to bolster his full-back options, since the four players in those positions combined for a total of seven assists last season but no Premier League goals.
While Tyrell Malacia is another interesting player being watched at the position, Raum would undoubtedly make a significant improvement in those attacking numbers.
