Manchester United vs Brighton, Erik ten Hag explains why Cristiano Ronaldo is sitting on the bench.

After missing most of the preseason schedule, according to Erik ten Hag, Cristiano Ronaldo still lacks the match fitness necessary to start for Manchester United.

On Sunday, United will host Brighton to open the new Premier League season, and Ten Hag will be hoping for three points to set the bar for the first games of the new season.

Summer acquisitions Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez are making their competitive club debuts in the Dutchman’s starting lineup for the opening game of the season.

In a pregame interview, Ten Hag outlined his decision-making and the reason Ronaldo was only well enough to sit on the bench in Anthony Martial’s absence.

A little preseason was mentioned already “He said to MUTV. “He had only 45 minutes of training when he only started last week. He is not as physically fit as the rest of his colleagues, and as I seen in the games on Friday and yesterday, the Premier League is extremely competitive, with high intensity, low block, and high block situations that require physical condition.”

Regarding Martinez and Eriksen’s involvement, he added: “They have a lot of experience and will be prepared.

“The most significant aspect of Christian Eriksen or Lisandro Martinez is that, while they do improve the squad, the team’s performance on the field is what matters most. We want to function and play as a unit.”
