Luton Town are reportedly planning a summer transfer approach for Blackburn Rovers attacker Sammie Szmodics.
Following Ben Brereton Diaz’s departure to La Liga giants Villarreal ahead of the 2023-24 season, the 28-year-old has taken on more goal-scoring responsibilities at Ewood Park.

Szmodics has made the net ripple 23 times in the Championship for Blackburn, leading the division’s Golden Boot race ahead of Southampton’s Adam Armstrong (20 goals).

The striker has also recently garnered international prominence, getting his first call-up to the Republic of Ireland during a camp in March.

Since joining Lancashire from League One club Peterborough United in the summer of 2022, the attacker has scored 36 goals in 84 games in all competitions.

According to The Sun, Luton are considering a bid for Blackburn striker Szmodics ahead of the summer transfer window, as the Hatters look for attacking reinforcements.

According to the report, Rob Edwards’ team would approach the 28-year-old regardless of whether they play in the Premier League or the Championship next season.

Following a much-needed 2-1 victory over Bournemouth at Kenilworth Road on Saturday afternoon, Luton are only in the bottom three on goal difference.

As reported last month, Brentford are reportedly interested in signing Szmodics, who is expected to leave Blackburn this summer.

Fulham, led by Marco Silva, are also reportedly interested in signing the Irish marksman, despite Rodrigo Muniz’s outstanding form since the beginning of February.

Celtic interested in Szmodics?

In addition to a trio of Premier League clubs, it is said that Scottish giants Celtic are considering a move for Szmodics as the season comes to an end.

This season, midfielder Matt O’Riley leads the Hoops in goalscoring in the Scottish Premiership, and Brendan Rodgers is said to be looking for a prolific forward to join his side.

Celtic are still a point ahead of Rangers after a thrilling 3-3 draw at Ibrox on Sunday, but Phillipe Clement’s side has played one fewer game.

While the Hoops compete for the title, Szmodics and Blackburn are striving to avoid relegation to League One under John Eustace’s leadership.

Rovers have moved four points clear of the relegation zone after collecting four points in their past two games, three of which came in a 5-1 destruction of Sunderland on Easter Monday.
