A new rule is coming to Serie A. Liverpool will reap the rewards in their ongoing struggle to unseat Manchester City if it makes it to England.

Liverpool will pay close attention as the Man City rivalry may be greatly affected by a change in Serie A rules.

From the upcoming season, Serie A will have a new structure.

The Scudetto race and the top of the table are the only topics covered by the new regulation. Instead of using the outdated technique of head-to-head record in the two regular-season games, a play-off game will be held to determine the season’s winner if the top two clubs finish with equal points.

The president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Gabriele Gravina, is trying to shake up the Italian game and make it “more attractive,” which is why this new rule has been implemented. However, given that it hasn’t occurred in many years, the likelihood of two sides coming out on equal points is still very low.

Ironically, the 1964 Serie A season saw Inter and Bologna compete in a play-off because of the regulations in effect at the time. Since then, the league has been awarded based on the customary method of having the most points at the top.

When Milan and Inter had chances to win the championship on the final day of the previous season, it was possible that it would have occurred. The Milanese cousins would have been level on 84 points if Milan had drawn against Sassuolo rather than won 3-0.

So what if a similar scenario happened in the Premier League, and how would it affect Liverpool. In the title race in 2021–2022, the Reds gave Manchester City a run for their money, heading into the last day of the season with everything to play for. In the end, Liverpool’s victory over Wolves was insufficient because Aston Villa was unable to hold off City and prevent Pep Guardiola’s team from winning their fourth championship in five years.

But suppose that both teams did finish tied at a point, which is not out of the question given the close scores between Liverpool and Manchester City. Who stands to gain?

The response may well be Liverpool. Last season, the two teams faced off three times, with Manchester City failing to defeat Liverpool even once. The difficulty for Liverpool over the past few seasons has never been defeating City; rather, it has always been maintaining a title challenge in such arduous circumstances.

Liverpool has consistently defeated City in one-off contests. However, City has also defeated Liverpool, most recently in a 4-1 drubbing at Anfield in February 2021.

However, consider the stress, pressure, anticipation, and buildup for fans of both teams if the championship came down to a single game. Although it is practically unthinkable, Liverpool may benefit from the emotion of the event.

This could become the standard in the upcoming years as football explores new strategies to appeal to a larger audience. Play-offs may gradually become more prevalent in the beautiful game as a result of Americanization, and they won’t merely be used to decide championships for teams with equal points.

But for now, Premier League supporters are still enthralled by the league structure. Liverpool will have to follow the rules if they want to defeat Man City.
