The good news for Klopp is that Firmino will return in time to fill the vacancy left by Darwin Nunes’ red card suspension against Crystal Palace.

However, Joel Matip faces a maximum two-week breakout and joins fellow defenders Ibrahima Konata and Kelvin Ramsay in his treatment room. Joe Gomez should at least be ready to replace Nat Phillips at centre-back as he started from the bench against Palace as a precaution.

But a number of long-term absentees, including midfielders Thiago Alcantara, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, will be left out. Meanwhile, Klopp’s attacking options have dwindled with the continued absence of Diogo Jota and replacement goalkeeper Kaomhin Kelleher is unlikely to return.

Liverpool scored their biggest away win in history between two nemesises at Old Trafford last year, losing 5-0 to the winners. Mohamed Salah scored a hat-trick and Naby Keita and Diogo Jota also scored as Jürgen Klopp’s side rioted in Manchester.

The Reds have been victorious in his last two visits to the U-16s and have remained virtually unbeaten in the league since March 2018.
