Liverpool return to action five days after losing to Tottenham and finished the game with nine men. In the Europa League test, Jürgen Klopp had to decide

Jurgen Klopp will give Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota a run in the Europa League on Thursday as the pair prepare to begin home bans.

Both men were sent off in Liverpool’s 2-1 Premier League defeat at Tottenham on Saturday. Jones received a straight red card after a VAR review in the first half, while substitute Jota quickly picked up two yellow cards after the break
Jones’ red card appeal failed, meaning both men miss Sunday’s league trip to Brighton.

However, both are available in the Europa League and could start at home to Union SG on Thursday night Liverpool started their European campaign with a 3-1 away win against LASK and bounced back after conceding early on.

The Belgians played Toulouse at home in the opening game, Mohamed Amoura scoring the equalizing goal in the second half.

Alexander Blessin’s side could call on England defender Christian Burgess and Alexis MacAllister’s brother Kevin, who both started against Toulouse. But what about Liverpool? Here, Mirror Football predicts how the Reds could bid for another group stage win.

Goalkeeping and defender
Caoimhin Kelleher had a strike against LASK and also enjoyed an EFL Cup game against Leicester. Jurgen Klopp assessed the Irishman before deciding not to sell him in the summer, and Kelleher’s place is expected on Thursday night.

The LASK match was also Ibrahima Konate’s first start in a month and the France international is expected to feature after making a cameo from the Tottenham bench. He replaced Joe Gomez then, but here the pair may have a chance to start together.
Saturday was Trent Alexander-Arnold’s first minutes since the injury that kept him out of England’s final squad.

He could start on the right if he continues his recovery with Kostas Tsimikas in the second leg
Alexis MacAllister started against Spurs but a reunion with his brother could see him on the bench. Another of Klopp’s summer signings, Wateru Endo, looks set to be the deepest of Liverpool’s midfield trio.

Harvey Elliott was an unused substitute on Saturday, so he was well rested for the next game. Jones is expected to be joined by the academy graduate, who will miss several league games and with youngster Stefan Bajcetic not set to be recalled following his latest injury.

“We will do everything to speed him up without pushing him,” Klopp said of Bajcetic. – We make a very precise plan for him, but at the end of the day, of course, it disappoints him, as well as us, that he got another one. So we have to draw him out a little bit. He can work on almost anything else, but not play. That’s it, I’d say.”

With Jota only missing one league game, there is no reason not to include him against Union SG.

Liverpool were disappointed by the Portuguese’s first booking against Spurs, but there is little he can fault for his second. With Cody Gakpo aggravating his injury while scoring at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Darwin Nunez is likely to feature.

The Uruguayan prepared to come off the bench when Jota was shown a red card, but was instead left on as an unused substitute.

Nunez, Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah are the only three senior strikers available for the weekend game, so Klopp has every chance of starting no more than one in Europe. Ben Doak started for Austria and could get the nod again, although Klopp has options from the bench if needed.

How Liverpool Can Counter Union SGDon’t Miss
The Liverpool manager will be looking to build on Saturday night’s performance, if not the result, when Liverpool return to European action. “It was really good, really, really special, top mentality, everything like that,” he told reporters at a pre-match press conference.

“And that’s what we need also [Thursday], because we answer a team that is flying in the league, clearly at the top of the table and doing very, very well again after losing key players, doing well again, unbeaten in Europe for a long time . Very special, what they are doing there and we have to be ready.”
