Liverpool FC dealt huge Jurgen Klopp blow amid top-four race with Manchester United and Newcastle 

The Liverpool boss will miss one of the Reds’ remaining two Premier League games as they battle Manchester United to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp was handed a two-match touchline ban after making comments to the media about referee Paul Tierney last month.

One match of Klopp’s two-match suspension has been suspended until the end of next season, the Football Association said, and an independent regulatory commission has also fined him £75,000.

The German spoke about Tierney following the Reds’ 4-3 win against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on April 30, saying: ‘We have our history with Mr Tierney. I don’t know what this man has with us.”

Klopp admitted that his comments constituted inappropriate behavior as they implied bias, questioned the referee’s integrity, were personal and offensive, and brought the game into disrepute.

An FA statement read: “Jurgen Klopp has been suspended from the touchline for two matches and fined £75,000 following media comments he made after Liverpool’s Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday 30 April 2023.

“The manager’s first match touchline ban takes effect immediately and the second is suspended until the end of the 2023/24 season, provided he does not commit any further FA rule violations E3 in the meantime.

“(He) admitted that his comments about the match referee during post-match media interviews constitute inappropriate behavior as they involve bias, question the referee’s integrity, are personal and offensive, and disparage the game”.

Klopp had just watched as Liverpool cruised to a stunning victory against Spurs just minutes after the visitors made a late comeback from a 3-0 deficit.

In his post-match press conference, he said: “How can they foul Mohamed Salah (just before Spurs’ third goal)?” We have our history with Tierney. I really don’t know what he has against us.

“He said there were no problems, but that can’t be true. The way he looks at me, I don’t understand. My celebration was unnecessary, which is fair, but what he said to me when he gave me the yellow card is not correct.”

It comes as the Anfield side are locked in a closely fought battle to finish in the top four of the Premier League and secure Champions League qualification for next season.

Liverpool have Aston Villa at home and Southampton away to play, with the Reds in fifth place. They are one point behind number four Manchester United, who have three league games remaining, against Bournemouth, Chelsea and Fulham.

United can ensure they finish at least fourth in the league by winning two of their remaining three games. However, with Liverpool hot on their heels, Klopp’s suspension will be a major blow as they look to make up their points defici‍t.

Jurgen Klopp has been fined £75,000 and suspended for two matches against Liverpool – one suspended – for comments made after last month’s 4-3 win against Tottenham.

The suspension is effective immediately, meaning Klopp will be in the stands for Saturday’s visit from Aston Villa as the Reds host their final game of the season at Anfield before their Southampton tenure ends next Sunday.

However, the second match has been suspended until the end of the 2023/24 season, the Football Association says, provided Klopp does not commit any further FA E3 rule violations in the meantime.

Klopp was booked by referee Paul Tierney after the Liverpool manager celebrated in front of fourth official John Brooks following stoppage time winner Diogo Jota on 30 April.

After the game, the Reds manager said he was only warned on Mr Brooks’ advice to match official Tierney, who Klopp said he wanted sent off for the second time this season following his sacking against Manchester City in October. “Jürgen Klopp has admitted that his comments about the match referee in post-match media interviews constitute inappropriate behavior as they suggest bias, question the integrity of the referee, are personal and offensive and bring the game into disrepute,” an FA statement said on Thursday.

“An independent regulatory commission imposed these sanctions following a subsequent hearing. The written rationale is given below.

“We have our history with Tierney, I really don’t know what he has against us,” Klopp told Sky Sports immediately after the thrilling match at Anfield. “He said there were no problems, but that can’t be true.”

“I don’t understand the way he looks at me. In England, nobody has to clarify such situations, it’s really difficult and difficult to understand. What he said to me when he gave me the yellow card is not correct.”

PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) later denied Klopp’s version of events, posting: “PGMOL is aware of comments made by Jurgen Klopp after his team’s game against Tottenham Hotspur.” Premier League match officials are registered at all matches via a communications system.

“Having fully reviewed referee Paul Tierney’s audio from today’s match, we can confirm that he acted in a professional manner, including when issuing the warning to the Liverpool manager. We therefore strongly reject any suggestion that the actions of Tierney were inappropriate”.

Speaking at his press conference the following week, Klopp said: “I tried to calm down but it didn’t work out well. I went to all the interviews and then said what I said. I know [Tierney] isn’t on purpose”. we have a history, you can’t deny it.

“I’m not a vindictive person at all, but things like this have happened in crucial games in the past. They didn’t happen on purpose, but they’re still there. The referees are really angry about this. I said. Me.” I shouldn’t have said some things, but lying wasn’t one of them.

Klopp was charged by the FA and fined £30,000 in October for being sent off in the 1-0 win over Manchester City when the German got angry at Bernardo Silva’s attack on Mohamed in the final stages of the match. Salah replied.
