After Thiago’s injury, two pundits advised Liverpool to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong this week, and the subject has generated discussion on social media.

Manchester United needed two summers to get Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, and they are currently having further difficulties in the transfer market as they try to sign Frenkie de Jong, a star player for Barcelona.

De Jong is at the center of the strangest transfer saga in a while; he wants to stay with Barcelona, but the club wants him to leave as their financial woes worsen (despite owing him a substantial amount in wages).

The Athletic reports that on July 14, Manchester United and De Jong reached an agreement on a fee of €75 million (£63 million), with an additional €10 million (£8 million) in future add-ons. But after almost four weeks, nothing has changed.

There appears to be a deal to be made. There has been agreement on a transfer fee. However, despite the fact that Chelsea have also been linked with looking into the matter (Spanish outlet Revelo even claimed that Todd Boehly spoke with the player on the phone a few days ago about a trade), nothing has changed in the drama for a while.

It was inevitable that Liverpool would at some time be mentioned as a potential steal for De Jong because the price tag they would have to pay — provided Barcelona would not shift the goalposts — had already been determined.

It was inevitable that at some point Liverpool would be linked with a steal for De Jong, with the price tag that they would have to pay — assuming that Barcelona did not move the goalposts — already having been worked out.

José Enrique said earlier this week on Twitter that De Jong would be a good signing for Liverpool, while Gabriel Agbonlahor told TalkSport that if the Reds were negotiating with Barcelona, the midfielder would already be at Anfield.

The clamour for a midfield signing for Liverpool is understandable. While Jürgen Klopp listed off midfield options in pre-season (just as he did in 2021), there was an obvious retort to his question.

What more do you want? Well, availability. Already, Thiago Alcântara is injured, Naby Keïta was ill but is now back, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones are out. Eight midfield options very quickly dropped to four before recovering to fiveAlthough Liverpool has only played one game this season, they are already dangerously close to being in a crisis.

De Jong, who is only 25 years old, undoubtedly has his finest years ahead of him. The former Ajax player has tremendous talent and would fit right in with the Liverpool squad. De Jong has been suggested as a potential replacement for Silva should the Dutchman leave Manchester City, which says a lot about the player’s cali

Having said that, he should be avoided by Liverpool, Manchester City, and Chelsea as well. The De Jong transfer fiasco is the complete antithesis of how the Reds have made their transactions so smoothly.ber.

For instance, before going all-in on Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool made sure that they were his top choice. De Jong, on the other hand, would prefer to remain in Barcelona.

Given their Champions League spot and overall much more secure status as an elite team, Liverpool would be an easier sell for him than Manchester United. Despite this, he would still prefer to stay at the Camp Nou. This should raise a serious alarm.

Anyone trying to sign him would be taking a huge risk if he does not want to leave Barcelona because, if nothing else, De Jong would prefer to be somewhere else.

Liverpool demonstrated with Van Dijk and other players that they won’t move until the player is completely convinced to do so. Klopp once stated (through the ECHO) that he seeks players who are willing to “push the train.”

A De Jong whose heart is still at Barcelona is of little service to them or anybody else, even at his best when he could be wonderful and the perfect cure for Liverpool’s midfield problems.
