Lions’ top three players to pursue with a first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft

The Detroit Lions’ offseason has been quite the experience thus far. They are now focused on the 2024 NFL Draft. The 29th choice in the first round could be targeted by general manager Brad Holmes, and Lions fans are excited to find out. This year’s draft is being conducted in the Motor City, which adds to the excitement.
The front office is under pressure to get this right because of the Detroit draft. Beyond that, though, given their performance, Holmes and his group are probably under pressure. In 2023, the Lions finally emerged victorious in the NFC North. They also advanced all the way to the NFC Championship Game during the playoffs.

In the NFL Draft, Holmes has demonstrated his ability to uncover gems in the rough. That’s what he’ll have to do this year. But whom could he attack first? Three possible picks for the Detroit Lions in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft are examined here.

Even after their NFL Free Agency action, the Lions were still in a position to sign a cornerback. However, Cam Sutton was just freed by Detroit following the public release of an arrest warrant for him. With Sutton out, the team now needs a cornerback of the same level. Fans of the Lions should keep an eye on McKinstry.

Because of his excellent ball skills, McKinstry can efficiently thwart pass attempts. He is incredibly alert when it comes to zone coverage and maintains composure under pressure. He can be a little too rough, particularly when he’s trying to jam receivers. In the NFL, he could do better at play recognition as well.

Overall, the Alabama product continues to have many positive aspects. On the first day, McKinstry might start in place of Carlton Davis. Additionally, he provides the squad with a longer-term alternative at the position.

This may cause Brad Holmes to pass on signing a seasoned player like Stephon Gilmore in favor of looking for a corner in the draft.

The Lions’ receiving group is an even more pressing necessity. Josh Reynolds is still a free agent, while Donovan Peoples-Jones has been retained by Detroit. Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jamieson Williams, and Kalif Raymond are the Lions’ options at the position. Still, there’s room for one more choice.

Naturally explosive, Brian Thomas Jr. is elusive after the catch. He can be a deep danger in the attack thanks to his strong ball-tracking abilities.

His footwork has some problems, and his performance before the 2023 season wasn’t particularly remarkable. Nevertheless, the Lions have the opportunity to take a small chance here.

The selection of Brian Thomas Jr. by the Lions could finally give them a legitimate deep threat on the field.

Additionally, he might provide space for tight end Sam LaPorta and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. Though it’s not the most urgent need for Detroit, don’t be shocked if Brad Holmes decides to use the 29th overall choice to add a wide receiver.

Fans of the Lions should also keep an eye on their offensive line.

Detroit is proud of the caliber of their lineup. Nevertheless, the line had some injury issues throughout the previous campaign. Jonah Jackson, their starting guard, left them this offseason. Kevin Zeitler, who is 34 years old and on a one-year contract, was also added.

Frank Ragnow, the center, is another thing to think about. Despite being one of the league’s greatest centers, Ragnow has had injuries recently. In fact, there were occasions when the injury report classified the seasoned lineman as having numerous ailments.

Even if Jackson Powers-Johnson doesn’t start, he might still be useful in 2024. Out of his stance, the Oregon product is explosive. In addition, he is proficient in run and pass protection. On the field, Powers-Johnson is a true leader in terms of tone.

His length is not ideal for an interior lineman in the starting lineup. And in college, he had a habit of hanging up calls. Powers-Johnson is nevertheless NFL-ready and capable of contributing right away.

When necessary, he may play center or guard, and when Ragnow decides to hang up his spikes, he can eventually take his spot. In the Motor City, enthusiasts should keep an eye on the Oregon product.
