Right now, Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister appears to be the prime candidate to become Liverpool’s first signing of the summer.
Fabrizio Romano reported on Tuesday that the Reds were “close to agreeing” on personal terms with the player and could activate a release clause in his deal with Brighton. As such, they are the “big favorites” to win the race.
So what will the Argentinian bring to Anfield when he arrives? Mac Allister has 10 goals and two assists so far this season, but both numbers are somewhat deceptive. First of all, there are six goals scored from the penalty spot. So you can expect his tally to drop at Anfield where Mohamed Salah is the top scorer.

On the other hand, he’s actually more creative than his paltry assist list suggests.
Jurgen Klopp recently pointed out (via the official Liverpool website) that Salah “very often” plays the “second or third last pass”, an “important” but often overlooked contribution to gameplay.
We’ve described this as Salah’s secret weapon, and interestingly, it’s a strength shared by Mac Allister. As an illustration, let’s take a look at the goals this season where the Argentine delivered the penultimate assist or ‘hockey assist’. our Liverpool.com newsletter — every day of the week we send exclusive bonus material only to people who have signed up for our mailing list!

Some of them don’t give each other much consideration. There was one in the 2-2 draw away to Leicester when he sent a relatively easy ball to Pervis Estupiñán who then set up a long range curler for Kaoru Mitoma.
Nor will we be looking at the short pass that Estupiñán played in the 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace, as the left-back was the real architect of the goal with the following cross.
But let’s get to the most interesting examples:

West Ham 0-2 Brighton, 21 August, Leandro Trossard goal (0-2, 66′) – Here Mac Allister received the ball at midfield and produced an accurate pass to Pascal Groß between Declan Rice and Tomáš Souček. The German was then able to blast Trossard around the corner, who ran in to score, but it was Mac Allister who really unblocked the defense from what initially looked like a harmless attack.
September, goal by Leandro Trossard (3-2, 64′) This time the 24-year-old pounced on a loose ball for James Maddison and then hit it in Groß before Wilfried Ndidi could get there. Again, Groß worked up to Trossard, who overtook him Danny Ward. Mac Allister’s technical ability and tenacity were key.
Incidentally, he would score twice later in the match to secure victory, including a stunning free kick.

domestic soccer now, and Mac Allister tied perfectly with tournament World Cup player Lionel Messi in a group stage win over Argentina. He came on to give Messi an option and then delayed his pass to Nicolás Otamendi, having managed to stay onside, allowing the striker to come back from the wing. Otamendi then lost to Messi, who gave his side the lead.
Leeds-Brighton 2-2, 11 March, goal by Solly March (1-2, 61′) — After receiving the ball from midfield partner Moisés Caicedo, Mac Allister quickly got away from Tyler Adams and managed to beat both the ‘American Crysencio Summerville first slipping wide at Mitoma. The fuller then hauled him down the line and fired him across the penalty area, with March able to pack him home.
These targets demonstrate that Mac Allister’s ability to beat a man, his vision and awareness of him make him an under-the-radar threat. If he nurtures highly skilled teammates at Anfield next season, he could deliver devastating results, as Messi and others have already noted.
