Leicester City defeated Southampton 5-0 on Wednesday, effectively ending the Saints’ hopes of automatic promotion this season.

Goals from Abdul Fatawu, Wilfred Ndidi, and Jamie Vardy brought the Foxes closer to a Premier League return. Enzo Maresca’s side is now five points ahead of third-placed Ipswich Town and four ahead of Leeds United in second.

Southampton’s unlikely path to automatic promotion would now require them to win their next two games and hope Leeds lose both of theirs, so overcoming the Whites’ superior goal difference. Both clubs face each other on the last day of the season, with Daniel Farke’s side now holding a goal difference of +43 to the Saints’ +24.

Leeds will be aware, however, that their chances of automatic promotion are out of their hands, with third-placed Ipswich just a point behind with a game in hand. The Whites next play against Queens Park Rangers on Friday.

Farke’s club has also suffered an injury blow ahead of their trip to Loftus Road, with winger Dan James sustaining a costal cartilage damage and an oblique abdominal muscle rupture during Monday’s 4-3 victory against Middlesbrough.

According to a club statement, winger Dan James sustained a costal cartilage injury and an oblique abdominal muscle rupture during Leeds United’s 4-3 Championship victory over Middlesbrough at Riverside Stadium on Monday. As a result, the 26-year-old will miss Friday’s game at Loftus Road against Queens Park Rangers.
