Leeds likened to Liverpool after ‘phenomenal run’, but play-off uncertainty looms.

Leeds United are bracing themselves for an anxious wait to find out whether they will be promoted to the Championship.

Daniel Farke’s squad has won 27 games this season and knows that one more win at home may not be enough to secure promotion to the Premier League.

Following Ipswich Town’s midweek victory against Coventry City, Kieran McKenna’s side is solidly in control heading into this weekend’s final round of fixtures. The Tractor Boys only need a point to complete their 22-year wait for top-flight football, and Leeds are hoping that local rivals Huddersfield Town can spoil the celebration.

For some, it’s worth recalling how far United has gone from their disappointing start to the season. An 18-game Championship run propelled Leeds back into promotion territory at the start of 2024, and a former Elland Road player believes the club’s fate will be decided in the playoffs.

“It is going to be very difficult for Leeds to get promoted this season following their poor run of form,” Stephen Warnock told NewBettingOffers.co.uk. “I believe they should try to shift their thinking as soon as possible and get away from the possibility of making the playoffs.

“They can still move up automatically, but it will be really difficult now. They followed a similar trajectory to Liverpool in the Premier division, going on a tremendous run and finishing as the best team in each respective division in 2024.

“For a while, they appeared unbeatable. Then doubts began to seep in after their draw against Watford, and they would have wondered, ‘Where did it come from? Teams in the Championship have frequently made late runs to qualify for the play-offs and then go on to win promotion.

“The same thing might now happen to Leeds, with another team stealing promotion from them. Leeds has a lot of good players, and if they can mentally prepare for the playoffs, few teams will want to play them.

“They’ve had a lot of injuries as of late and if they can get a bit of a break and get a few players back to their best before the play-offs, then you’d hope that they can come up.”
