Leeds denied penalty, miss chance for top spot in Championship.

Leeds United wasted the chance to go top of the Championship after a goalless draw against Sunderland on Tuesday, but will feel cheated.

Leeds United were denied a penalty for apparent handball on a night when they had the opportunity to go top of the Championship.

On Tuesday, the Whites met a struggling Sunderland side at Elland Road, and Daniel Farke’s team had a terrible night.

But even the most ardent Mackem supporters would concede they were fortunate to leave West Yorkshire with a point after Luke O’Nien definitely handled the ball while attempting to defend a corner with only 15 minutes of normal time remaining.

Crysencio Summerville’s delivery was met on the edge of the six-yard box by Tottenham Hotspur loanee Joe Rodon, who appeared to rise the highest. However, the Wales international, like practically everyone else at Elland Road, was outraged.

Sunderland captain O’Nien was unable to match Rodon’s jump, so he desperately threw his arm in front of Rodon’s face and pushed the ball away from the tall centre-back, who had a free header.

The ball tumbled to Black Cats goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, who gratefully gathered as Leeds players hurried to circle and argue with referee Tim Robinson, but their complaints went unheard, and play resumed.

After losing 2-1 away to Coventry City on Saturday (6th April), Leeds needed a win to climb the table. However, on a night when league leaders Leicester City lost at Millwall and third-place Ipswich Town did not play, Leeds squandered the opportunity to put pressure on their rivals, leaving them with only one win in their past four.

The Tractor Boys play Watford on Wednesday and will move top of the league if they can recover from their 1-0 derby loss to Norwich City last Saturday. Leeds face Blackburn Rovers next Saturday at midday, and they might finish outside of the automatic promotion places.
