Nunez left Benfica for an estimated base price of £64 million, with an additional £21.3 million in conceivable add-ons.

The Uruguayan would sign a six-year contract, which would be a club record if those add-ons are satisfied.

The selling team, Benfica, released those numbers in a statement on their official website, outlining a €57 million initial deal and a possible €100 million total sum.

However, Klopp seems to imply that some of those stats weren’t completely accurate while addressing during his news conference on Thursday in Singapore.

The German disputed the assertion that the club had paid “almost €100 million including add-ons” for Nunez when it was made to him.

The Liverpool manager had an unusual reaction when asked how the transfer market has changed since he expressed opposition to the idea of paying players such high sums of money in 2016.

“Obviously a lot, a lot. These kinds of things do occur, according to Klopp.

“The data [you are providing regarding Nunez] are incorrect, but it’s not a problem because I am aware of the type of numbers that are prevalent worldwide.

“When a striker as exciting as Darwin comes available on the market, you have to be prepared to pay a premium.

As I previously stated, it is not the price you indicated or the prices being offered, but there is no issue.

If Nunez settles in similarly to Klopp’s other high-priced Liverpool additions, like Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, there won’t be any doubts about his price tag.

They need to be aware by now that new players require and benefit from time, and we ought to be the first Liverpool fans on the planet to just remove the transfer cost we paid. Simply delete it; it isn’t necessary.

Now that he is a boy from us, we are doing all in our power to develop him beyond what we saw at Benfica. The basis is this.

“Once more, it is my duty to assist Darwin in realizing his full potential.”

In the Reds’ second preseason match against Crystal Palace on Friday, expect Nunez to play.
