Ipswich Town, Portsmouth and Peterborough United target National League star

Ipswich Town, Portsmouth, Peterborough United, and Mansfield Town are all interested in Altrincham star Chris Conn-Clarke, according to Football Transfers.

Ipswich Town is aiming for the Premier League, and this summer will be spent preparing for the major step up. Portsmouth and Mansfield Town are also on the rise, having won promotions to the Championship and League One, respectively, but Posh will continue in the third tier.

Given their respective divisions, few expected the teams’ transfer targets to cross across.

According to Football Transfers, all four parties have set their sights on Chris Conn-Clarke.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has had an outstanding season in the National League with Altrincham, scoring 23 goals and providing 12 assists across all competitions. As a result, this summer, Ipswich Town, Portsmouth, Peterborough United, and Mansfield Town are all interested in signing him.

It is stated that, while he still has two years on his contract at Alty, it is expected that he would leave for pastures new following such a successful season in non-league.

The EFL awaits

Amidst a great season of National League football, it appears that a promotion to the Football League is certain.

Clubs up and down the league ladder look to non-league for new talent, and Conn-Clarke appears to be the latest to join that list. Peterborough United are the most well-known non-league recruiter, with a number of stars starting at London Road before moving on to bigger things.

Conn-Clarke appears capable of making that jump, and at only 22, few expect him to slow off very soon. Despite this season’s highs, it appears that the best days of the Northern Irishman’s career are ahead.

Ipswich Town a step too far?

Ipswich Town will be eager to make clever additions this summer, but some may argue that a move to Portman Road is too much for Conn-Clarke at this point.

The Tractor Boys are aiming for the Premier League and will most likely look for players with higher-level experience than those in the National League.

Perhaps Conn-Clarke would have been a shrewd signing and potential target if they hadn’t been promoted, but you’d expect them to set their eyes higher as they prepare for top-flight football.

That could provide optimism for EFL suitors Portsmouth, Peterborough United, and Mansfield Town, but only time will tell what happens to the Altrincham star this summer following his outstanding season.
