Forward Jurgen Klopp was begged by the Liverpool team to make the correct move at the wrong time.

Takumi Minamino completed his transfer to AS Monaco in a transaction that may have cost up to £15.5 million, ending his time at Liverpool.

The Japanese international, who joined Merseyside from Red Bull Salzburg in the second half of the 2019–20 season but was never more than a fringe player, could more than double the Reds’ investment. As a result, he left a peculiar legacy.

Minamino has never had it easy at Anfield since there was always a reason why his Liverpool career didn’t take off. He effectively had to play catch-up from day one after joining the Reds in the middle of their title-winning season and having his bedding-in period interrupted by the coronavirus outbreak as he struggled to adapt to a new culture.

Since he only made one Premier League start in 2021–2022, his playing time would be restricted. Although Minamino only made 24 appearances during the season, he still managed to score 10 goals, leading Liverpool achieve a domestic double despite their pursuit of an unprecedented quadruple.

Because he was so important to the Reds’ journeys to Wembley, his early League Cup goals against Norwich City, Preston North End, and Leicester City earned him a place on the bench for the second leg of the semi-final against Arsenal and a spot on the bench for the championship match against Chelsea. After being forced to play as a substitute in the FA Cup quarterfinal against Nottingham Forest, his punishment for an FA Cup hat trick against the Canaries was to be left out of the matchday squad for the semi-final or final.
