Forest considered signing ‘unbelievable’ ex-Man United record-breaker in January.

Nottingham Forest fought tooth and nail to sign a goalkeeper in the January transfer window, eventually securing Matz Sels. However, a top, top stopper was on the City Ground radar for a short time.

Sels has done a decent job since joining Forest. He’s made an impression on Belgium since moving to the City Ground, winning plaudits from the national media for his performances.

Matt Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos were both signed during the summer transfer window, although neither goalie has made an impact at Forest.

For a while when Nuno Espirito Santo joined the club, it appeared that he would continue with the custodians he had available.

Instead, he chose to sign Sels, who joined Forest from Strasbourg for a relatively low sum of £5 million.

Things may have turned out quite differently had Forest shown an interest in a world-class goalie on a free transfer!

Nottingham Forest were interested in David de Gea

The Telegraph reports that Forest expressed interest in signing the former Manchester United stopper in January.

The player has been without a club since leaving Old Trafford on a free transfer last summer.

His agent is Jorge Mendes, who also represents Nuno Espirito Santo, and Forest had questions about the goalie.

However, reputed transfer guru Mike McGrath claims in the article that nothing was ever close to being finalised, which is not surprising.

De Gea surpassed Manchester United records, surpassing Peter Schmeichel as the club’s all-time leading goalkeeper in terms of clean sheets.

He also won the Premier League title in 2012/13, thus it’s a mystery why he doesn’t have a club.

Schmeichel has already praised De Gea, calling him ‘unbelievable’, and he will undoubtedly sign with a club this summer.

Forest must get goalkeeper recruitment right this summer

When it comes to goalkeeper recruitment, the transfer market promises to be unpredictable once more this summer.

Forest would most certainly need to let players go in order to sign new ones, albeit the Reds have been linked with Caoimhin Kelleher.

Forest needs to make sure they get it properly this time. Turner and Vlachodimos have been terrible signings, and that won’t do next season.

Sels will be around next season, and he’s earning the right to compete for the top slot in 2024/25.

However, a younger goalkeeper will most certainly be recruited to compete with him, therefore De Gea is unlikely to be considered again by Forest.

One way or another, the team must get it right between the posts this time, and buying another subpar goalkeeper is not an option.
