5 for 4 – Trent Alexander-Arnold breaks Liverpool’s niche record in ‘crazy’ manner.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is used to reaching new heights and he did it again with his assist count in April, which could still grow.

The Liverpool number 66 had only managed his first assist of the season in January, an unprecedented for a player who has been at the heart of the Reds’ creative hub for more than five seasons.

But the month of April showed his pace, a period which coincided with him adjusting his role in the Liverpool system to propel him further up the midfield.

Against Arsenal there was a late equalizer assist from Roberto Firmino before four quickly followed against Leeds (two assists), Nottingham Forest and West Ham.

That’s five Premier League assists in four games, all of which occurred in the month of April and which resulted in a record niche for Alexander-Arnold. According to Opta, the 24-year-old is the first Liverpool player to get five assists in a single month of a Premier League season.

There are a host of Reds who have won four in a single month, including Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez, Jordan Henderson, Mo Salah, Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane – plus Alexander-Arnold himself last season.

But only one has managed to reach five so far and that total could be increased when Spurs travel to Anfield on Sunday, the last day of April.

Alexander-Arnold’s change of role has ignited his season and Klopp has been as vocal as the fans in his assessment of the right-back’s recent performance.

“The stuff Trent played – wow,” he gushed, speaking to BT Sport after the win at West Ham. “It was absolutely insane.”

The Scouser was again heavily involved with 99 passes and 124 touches during Wednesday’s game, bringing a composure to his game with Joel Matip saying: ‘It was really fun to watch them play [in midfield]’.

Liverpool gave up late on reigniting their European ambitions this season, but Thursday night’s Premier League results pointed the likeliest way forward.

Jurgen Klopp and his Reds have had a frustrating season for the most part. However, three straight wins and a few favorable slips from other teams in the race for Champions League and Europa League qualification saw them slip into the back goal.

Now that rivals Manchester United have failed in their Europa League attack, the top 4 will book their places in the marquee competition; for the next season. From today’s perspective, it looks like United and Newcastle will sit in the bottom two spots behind title favorites Manchester City and leaders Arsenal. Incidentally, Newcastle were at Liverpool on Thursday night for a game against relegation-threatened Everton, and the Reds will have – not so secretly – cheered on their neighbours. But even that didn’t bring them any extra luck as Newcastle swept away their hosts.

Goals from Callum Wilson (2), Joelinton and Jacob Murphy did the damage in a 4-1 triumph that leaves the Saudi-backed Magpies third in the Premier League table. But what about the hunting pack?

Manchester United looked in full control against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday night – with goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford leading 2-0 – before splitting the points when Pedro Porro and Son Heung-min finally held them up at the restart .

When the final whistle blew, Tottenham had overtaken Aston Villa and fifth-placed Liverpool with 54 points from 33 games. Goal difference aside, Villa have an identical record to them in sixth place as Liverpool now have a slight edge when it comes to Europa League qualification.

One point behind these two sides, the Reds still have a game to play, as they will also face Tottenham in their last six matches. However, Liverpool and others will be looking over their shoulder as Brighton have played just 30 games and picked up 49 points.
