Northampton Town’s Football and Education Programme Women’s squad were defeated by Reading in the National Football Youth League South Premier Women on Wednesday afternoon.

Reading took the lead early on, as a bouncing ball was pushed past Iona Smith.

The visitors dominated the first half, nearly doubling their lead when a defender came at the far post and headed a deep corner wide.

In the first 45 minutes, the Cobblers came closest to scoring with a long-range free-kick from Mia Richards that went narrowly over.

Reading got its second goal midway through the first half. Cobblers captain Ruby Heselden blocked the first attempt, but the follow-up was sent into the roof of the net.

The visitors increased their lead after a free kick was cleared to the outside of the box and a first-time, side-footed shot reached the back of the net.

They scored a fourth just before halftime when a midfielder moved the ball out of her foot and rifled in a long-range goal.

The second quarter was more evenly matched, with the Cobblers missing two chances before the hour mark. Kitty Crouch nodded Richards’ looping corner wide at the far post, while Cassidy Flynn slammed Keeley Jackson’s low ball across the face of goal past the back stick.

At the other end, an attacker lofted a shot from the fringe of the area that hit the top of the bar.

A few minutes later, a teammate stretched to convert a low cross for the fifth goal.

The Cobblers came within inches of scoring a late consolation when substitute Lauren Hewitt found Crouch in the area, but her outside-of-the-foot effort was finger-tipped wide by the keeper.

Cobblers: Iona Smith, Maddie Carter, Ruby Heselden, Laila Channell, Cassidy Flynn, Afrika de Villiers, Georgia Gale, Mia Richards, Kitty Crouch, Keeley Jackson, and Ellie Barker
