Dallas Cowboys Are Under Pressure To Select A 38-Touchdown QB To Replace Dak Prescott

The Dallas Cowboys failed once more, and Dak Prescott thought that this 2023 team was different because the season was on the line and there were reasonable expectations for a Super Bowl run from both inside the Dallas building and the media/analysts outside.

Prescott finished what was likely his finest regular season ever and was considered for NFL MVP this year. The Cowboys were two-score favorites against the Green Bay Packers, who boast the youngest roster in the NFL and a first-year starting quarterback, going into their wildcard round game on Saturday.

Dak Prescott finished the 2023 NFL regular season ranked among the top five in a number of important passing metrics. Prior to facing the Green Bay Packers on Sunday in the playoffs, he had accumulated 4,516 yards (3rd), 36 touchdowns (1st), 9 interceptions, and a QB rating of 72.5 (2nd).

Despite the fact that Kellen Moore was one of the young, talented offensive minds of the future, many people rolled their eyes when Jerry Jones and company decided to fire him at the end of the previous season, play calling was taken over by head coach Mike McCarthy, and the Dallas Cowboys offense looked outstanding for the most of the season.

Ultimately, Prescott and CeeDee Lamb developed a great rapport and became perhaps the best quarterback/wide receiver combination in the league.

The Dallas Cowboys boasted a defense that concluded the season ranked fifth in the NFL, in addition to Dak Prescott and an explosive offense that averaged 389 yards and 30 points per game and finished with 77 touchdowns in the regular season.

Following yet another heartbreaking early playoff defeat, the Dallas brass went into the offseason with more questions than answers.

At first, it was thought that Jerry Jones and the team would extend Prescott’s deal in order to clear financial space and retain the majority of their best players.

However, recent rumors have indicated that Prescott will be allowed to play out his contract with the Cowboys, becoming a free agent after 2024, and that both the team and the quarterback will honor this decision.

Former general manager and current ESPN NFL analyst Mike Tannenbaum advises that Dallas take University of Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in the 2024 NFL draft, given the uncertainty surrounding the Cowboys’ quarterback position beyond 2024.

Tannenbaum draws a parallel between the Baltimore Ravens picking Lamar Jackson while Joe Flacco was still their quarterback and the Green Bay Packers drafting Jordan Love while Aaron Rodgers was still their starter.

“This pertains to seizing a chance,” Tannenbaum stated. “When Aaron Rodgers went down, Brett Favre was at the height of his powers, and they grabbed him.”

The difference now with Jordan Love is that they advanced by giving up a fourth-round pick.

They seize opportunities, and all I’m saying is that, while I believe Dak Prescott to be superior, I doubt that any of us believe he earns $52 million more annually than Penix.

Penix would undoubtedly be chosen with the goal of having him succeed Prescott in the end, maybe as early as the 2025 campaign.

Penix would probably have to be selected in the first round if the Dallas Cowboys were to make a run for him. Dallas now has the 24th choice overall in the draft, but Penix is rising rapidly in mock drafts.

The 23-year-old quarterback stunned everyone with his incredible performance at the Combine and then turned in a solid pro day performance, clocking in at a startling 4.51 40-yard dash. at addition, he had the best vertical jump of any quarterback who took part at the NFL Combine at 36.5 inches.

The Heisman Trophy runner-up finished 2023 with 38 touchdowns in all. If the Cowboys are serious about allowing Prescott to test free agency at the end of this season, then this seems like the right course of action.
