Norwich City Women completed the Cambridge double on Tuesday, defeating Cambridge City 6-0 just two days after beating Cambridge United at the Abbey Stadium.

The Nest hosted its first nighttime game of 2024, and any aspirations for an early spring evening were quickly dashed by deepening darkness and a steady sprinkle of rain throughout.

A striking difference in opponents saw must-win Norwich face must-not-lose Cambridge City, with the latter’s preparations lasting only minutes when Lauren Tomlinson capitalized on a second ball from her own throw-in to fire home a stinging left-footed shot.

Despite being behind, the visitors brought roughness and fighting spirit to The Nest, contesting every ball and challenge. Despite their disruptive demeanor, it was the yellow shirts who would have the most possession, connecting significant movements together at every opportunity.

At the quarter-hour mark, City made it two with a Natasha Snelling touch that passed through several bodies before her effort.

Ten minutes in, Megan Frary’s gloves in the Cambridge City goal were undeniably clean as she made a fantastic, sprawling stop to deny a well-hit Alice Parker free kick.

A handful of half-chances for each side appeared to bring the first half to an end, but Rachel Lawrence struck home with conviction in extra time to give her team a comfortable 3-0 lead at the break.

Lawrence scored her second goal just four minutes into the second half, neatly around the goalkeeper and rolling into an empty net.

Lauren Hailes scored her second goal in City colours five minutes later, cannoning in off the left post from a long distance to make it five after 54 minutes.

As the deficit grew, head coach Scott Emmerson decided to give the bench some extra minutes. First-half substitute Freya Symonds made an immediate impact, looping the ball over a helpless defender and smashing home Norwich’s sixth goal only 10 minutes after coming on.

Sarah Quantrill remained vigilant to deny several decent chances from the visitors, while Frary made some nice saves of her own late on, with the hosts winning 6-0.
