Barnsley Boss gives update on 26-year-old with contract expiring.

Barnsley manager Neill Collins has stated that they are ‘hoping’ Robbie Cundy will return to training soon.

Barnsley are still hoping that the defender can make an impact before the end of the season.

Cundy, 26, hasn’t played at all this season owing to injury issues.

According to the Barnsley Chronicle, Collins has stated that he hopes to return to training shortly and be in contention before the end of the season. He recently had a baby, so he has a lot going on in his life. It’s very optimistic, but I’m sure he’s just eager to play some football.

“We had scheduled him to play at Stevenage. But he’s experienced a setback, which we expected given how long he’s been out. We will not exert any pressure on him. If he is accessible, we will take it as it comes.

Having Cundy back would be a significant help for Barnsley as they seek promotion to the Championship.

However, he has been out for a time, and it may be a danger to put him right back into the team.

The Tykes signed the centre-back in 2022, and he has since made 31 appearances across all competitions for the Yorkshire club, scoring twice.

He is out of contract at the conclusion of the season and has yet to sign an extension, so he will become a free agent in late June as things stand.

Collins’ team has a critical decision to make about his long-term future at Oakwell. However, for the time being, their primary focus will be on upcoming games and getting him back in shape.

Cundy progressed through Oxford United’s system before moving on to non-league clubs Gloucester City and York City.

Bristol City then handed him a Football League lifeline in 2019, and he spent three years at Ashton Gate, with time spent on loan at Exeter City, Gillingham, and Cambridge United to gain game time before Barnsley pulled him north.

The Tykes return to action at home this weekend against Reading, looking to rebound from recent defeats to Charlton Athletic and Stevenage.
