The weekend saw the remarkable return of former Liverpool player Luis Suarez to his original club Nacional in Uruguay.

The new signing and his family were welcomed by a sold-out stadium, and words from players like Lionel Messi were included in a video posted on social media. Along with lending him his £12 million private aircraft, Suarez’s former teammate at Barcelona flew him to Uruguay for the unveiling.

Messi replied, “I want to give you a big embrace and wish you the best of luck in this next phase of your career. I am aware of how crucial it is for you to be at Nacional, back in your home country after a lengthy absence, while you get ready for the upcoming World Cup.

“I’ll have to continue to follow Nacional from here. As you are aware, I adore you and would sacrifice anything for you. I hope to visit you soon and send you my best.”

Suarez’s contract with Atletico Madrid expired, and he now joins Nacional on a free transfer. The 35-year-old began his professional career in the Uruguayan team’s academy but was only able to make four first-team appearances before being signed by a club in Europe.

At the Camp Nou, Suarez and Messi played together for six years before the latter left on a free transfer to join La Liga rivals Atletico. Last summer, Messi left Barcelona and transferred for free to join Paris Saint-Germain.

With the transfer, the former Liverpool striker has completed a full circle after being linked to several teams this summer, including suggestions that he may have rejoined Reds great Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa. Although he apparently preferred to stay in Europe, the Uruguayan admitted it was ‘difficult’ to turn down the chance to travel there with his former team.

“All the videos and words regarding this issue that have reached us and touched our hearts have been really exciting. It was hard to turn down the chance to play with Nacional once more “Suarez responded to the signing’s announcement with a video message.
