While on loan at Sevilla last season, Anthony Martial failed to score in nine La Liga games; the France international had a strong preseason while on tours in Thailand and Australia; it has been nine years since a Manchester United forward scored 20 league goals in a season.

Whom did Manchester United’s last player with 20 Premier League goals in a season? The answer is Robin van Persie, who in 2012/13, Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season as manager, led Manchester United to their final Premier League championship with 26 goals.

Since Ferguson left Old Trafford for the final time nine seasons ago, United has gone nine seasons without having a player score 20 or more Premier League goals.

Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal, who both scored 18 goals in the previous season and in 2020–21, have come the closest.

Unfortunately, because this is a condensed version of the tale, this information is not available.

Eight Premier League sides have seen players score 20 or more goals in a season since Ferguson’s retirement, with Liverpool and Manchester City each having a player score 20 or more goals seven times.

The only side from the traditional Big Six to not have at least one player attain this milestone in a season during this time span is Manchester United.

Outside of the Big Six, Jamie Vardy has scored 20 goals for Leicester three times, Romelu Lukaku has scored 20 goals for Everton, and Danny Ings has scored 20 goals for Southampton.

Martial, though, started the season as the team’s primary central attacker and led the line for United in Thailand and Australia, scoring three goals and providing one assist.

However, since the beginning of the 2020–21 campaign, Martial has only scored five league goals, with his goal against Everton in October serving as his lone league goal in England and Spain since February 2021.

Although he has played on the sides as well as down the middle while at Old Trafford, the 26-year-old has only scored 10+ goals in three of his seven Premier League seasons.

Martial’s most productive season came in 2019–20, when he scored all 17 of his Premier League goals while dribbling down the midfield as United went on to place third in the league.
