A setback to Liverpool as a £40 million midfield target ‘opens talks’ with Juventus about a transfer

Nicolo Zaniolo, an attacking midfielder for AS Roma, may not be available to Liverpool this summer since Juventus is prepared to make a serious move for him. One of the most promising young players in Serie A, Zaniolo has drawn attention in European competition.

Report on GOAL Juventus has made contact with Roma to start negotiations for a transfer of the 22-year-old, who spent much of the 2021–22 season playing on the right wing under Jose Mourinho. The Old Lady are prepared to step up their pursuit, and talks over his prospective signing are still underway.

Juventus has a long-standing interest in Zaniolo that is only now being formalized, and Roma is willing to accept a deal of about £43 million. The asking price might prove to be a difficult obstacle for the Bianconeri to overcome, but they might have a secret weapon.

According to the source, Massimiliano Allegri would be willing to sweeten the deal by using Brazilian midfielder Arthur Melo, who was strongly linked with Arsenal in January. It is unknown at this moment whether Juventus’ stalwart Serie A opponents would be open to including the 25-year-old in a deal.

Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur allegedly joined AC Milan and Juventus in keeping an eye on Zaniolo’s position earlier this summer, according to Italian media. But if they want to move through with a potential transition, the latter appear to be in charge.

While Mohamed Salah’s future at Anfield is uncertain, Jurgen Klopp may be looking for a replacement right winger. Salah may leave the Reds in a year when his contract expires, following Sadio Mane who left this summer. And Zaniolo would definitely appeal to Klopp because of his ability to play on the right and his attacking presence in center midfield.

But if Liverpool were to engage Juventus in a bidding war during the current transfer window, it would be unexpected. The Merseyside giants are believed to have completed their business by acquiring Calvin Ramsay, a young right-back from Aberdeen. His arrival comes after Benfica attacker Darwin Nunez and Fulham starlet Fabio Carvalho were signed for £85 million.

Liverpool may move quickly to get Zaniolo’s services if he continues in Mourinho’s team for the remainder of the season. Roma would undoubtedly fancy their chances in any struggle, and it’s hard to conceive that they would want to sell to another Italian team.
