‘Go and sign him’ – Halliday tells Rangers and Celtic to agree deal for Dundee star

Andy Halliday has advised Rangers and Celtic to go after Dundee star Lyall Cameron, admitting there is elitism when it comes to recruiting Scottish players.

Despite speculation late in the summer transfer window, indications indicate that the Light Blues were never close to signing the 21-year-old on transfer deadline day [Scott Burns, 30 August].

The Gers have appeared hesitant to sign players from rival Premiership clubs in recent years, and Clyde 1 pundit Halliday has urged the Light Blues to investigate Cameron, claiming he will cost less than £1 million.

Speaking on the Open Goal YouTube channel (8 October, 1:40:30), he said: “Look at [Luke] McCowan signing for Rangers or Celtic from Dundee; that’s a no-brainer deal.

“Dundee fans will not like it, but Lyall Cameron is the next one. Go and sign him; how much will he cost? “Less than a million pounds.”I am not talking about Hibernian snobbery. “I’m talking about Rangers and Celtic.”

Si Ferry gave an answer: “Do you think Lyall Cameron could go and play for Rangers and Celtic?”

Halliday reacted: “I’m not saying this is the player that’s going to come in and make the immediate impact for you, but when I look at the squad players that Rangers and Celtic have signed over the years and spent good dough on, surely go and sign these boys.”

Will Lyall Cameron exit Dundee amid Rangers transfer speculation?

There has been a lot of talk about the Gers’ unwillingness to interact with other Premiership clubs in previous transfer windows, and it does feel like they are missing out on some extremely intriguing players.

While the signing of Connor Barron this summer was a step in the right direction, most fans would rather see the Light Blues spend big money on Lennon Miller or Lewis Ferguson than take a chance on a player with no experience in the division.

As Halliday says, a trade for Cameron would not be expensive, and while the Light Blues may have to pay a slightly higher price, they would be signing a player who has previously demonstrated his ability to compete at the level.

Hopefully, Philippe Clement and his recruiting team will take the former Gers player’s advise in the upcoming transfer windows and do more business closer to home, both in January and next summer.
