According to MassLive’s Christopher Smith, the Red Sox released the 44-year-old pitcher on Monday. Hill was on his fourth stint with Boston after being promoted in late August.
He pitched 3 2/3 innings, giving two runs while striking out five of the 15 batters he faced. He also walked three hitters.
Hill, MLB’s oldest active player, was in his twentieth season. He’s pitched for 13 different teams since his Cubs debut in 2005.
He was draughted out of high school but decided to pitch at Michigan.
In his junior season at Ann Arbour in 2002, he went 3-7 with a 3.55 ERA in 15 games, including eight complete games and two shutout. He had 104 strikeouts and 38 walks.
Hill was 90-73 with a 4.01 ERA in 382 career games, including 248 starts in the majors, having previously pitched for Baltimore, Cleveland, Oakland, the Angels, Yankees, Dodgers, Twins, Rays, Mets, Pirates, and Padres.
