The Canaries, who have had a summer of squad turmoil due to many high-profile departures from Carrow Road, were last week reported by The Athletic to have had a serious interest in the Brazilian attacker.
El Chiringuito TV, a Spanish program, has since stated that Reiner would be joining Granada on a season-long loan. As a result, Norwich will need to find new targets before tomorrow night’s 11pm deadline.
Following the hiring of Danish manager Johannes Hoff Thorup in the off-season, Norwich has brought in a number of foreign players. In recent months, Thorup has recruited players to Norfolk including Oscar Schwartau, Ante Crnac, Forson Amankwah, and Jose Cordoba.
Ben Chrisene and Callum Doyle, a defender who has won two promotions, are examples of domestic additions that Norwich has made, although it seems that the team is aiming to broaden its recruiting strategy, as evidenced by their interest in Reinier.
Reinier, who failed to live up to his enormous potential after completing an estimated £26 million transfer from Flamengo to the Spanish powerhouses at the age of 18, was reportedly the target of Norwich’s efforts to arrange a loan arrangement.
Prior to spending the previous season on loan at Serie A team Frosinone, where he scored two goals in 22 league games, Reinier was on loan at Borussia Dortmund and Girona.
Following successful negotiations between the two parties, it is currently claimed that the former Brazil youth international is set to stay in La Liga by signing a season-long loan agreement at Granada.
But given his background and the undeniable quality and promise that drew Madrid to pay such a high amount for his services in the first place, Reinier would have been an adventurous capture for Norwich in the Championship.
The 22-year-old, who has not yet made a professional game for Los Blancos, may have been considered as a substitute for fellow countryman Gabriel Sara, who left the Canaries to join Galatasaray earlier this summer after playing a key role in the previous season.
Sara is among a series of big departures from the club across the summer months, with Jon Rowe and Adam Idah having also moved on to pastures new.
Now that Norwich’s wantaway winger Abu Kamara is certain to depart the team after submitting a transfer request last week, it is imperative that they deal with their outgoings and bring in new players before the transfer market closes tomorrow night.
Although it is still unclear if the Canaries will act to acquire Reinier, supporters will be hoping for just that. If Norwich doesn’t act and makes some more acquisitions, it will be difficult to envision a repeat of last season’s top-six finish.
Though Hoff Thorup does have players like Josh Sargent and Borja Sainz at his disposal, their early games in the 2024/25 Championship campaign have shown a lack of creativity and potency in the final third. Nevertheless, none of their matches have ended in victories.
