League Two According to sources, Swindon Town have approached former Charlton Athletic midfielder Jack Payne in an attempt to bring him back to the County Ground.
Swindon fans were disappointed to learn that Dan Kemp had chosen to join Stevenage in League One, despite their efforts to persuade him to return. However, insiders say the Robins are also attempting to sign another former star, Jack Payne, as a free agent.
The club made the approach in recent weeks, but the player has yet to reject Swindon and is instead considering his options ahead of pre-season, with more than one offer still on the table. Following the response, recruitment officials switched their attention to Kemp, who was deemed a “more urgent” deal due to his readiness to sign with Stevenage.
Payne spent the 23/24 season on loan from Charlton to MK Dons in League Two, where he was part of the side that just missed out on promotion to League One. The Dons are also interested in signing the player after he impressed boss Mike Williamson.
The player appeared in 88 games across all competitions for Swindon, scoring 18 goals and assisting 13 times as he helped Ben Garner’s side reach the play-offs before losing to Port Vale in the semi-finals. He then decided to follow his manager to Charlton Athletics. Despite a few promising times, Garner’s stint at the Valley was marred by managerial turbulence, as he was replaced by Michael Appleton, who had previously moved him on from Lincoln City, and then Nathan Jones, who came while he was already on loan.
In addition, he has played for Southend United, Bradford City, Oxford United, Huddersfield Town, and Blackburn Rovers.
It is unclear whether the player will return to the club where he previously excelled, but there may be some optimism for Swindon fans disappointed by the news this morning.
