Man Banned for Posting ‘Grossly Offensive’ Messages After City Match – Is Social Media Accountability Enough?

A MALE has been banned from football after posting “grossly offensive” tweets following a Bradford City match.

Two remarks of “indecent, obscene, or menacing character” were posted on X following City’s 2-0 victory over Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park on October 12, 2024.

The Wirral resident has been barred from attending any football matches in the UK for three years.

The team’s spokesperson stated: “Bradford City AFC can today confirm that a male from Wirral has been handed a three-year football banning order after posting offensive content online.” The man, who committed the offence following the Bantams’ 2-0 victory over Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park in October, will be barred from attending any football matches in the UK for three years and must pay a £365 fine.

“The individual was found guilty of posting two communications on the social media platform ‘X’ that were described in court as excessively offensive or containing an indecent, vulgar, or menacing character.

“Bradford City AFC applauds the verdict and appreciates Merseyside and West Yorkshire Police for their efforts to bring the culprit to justice.

“The club would like to remind everyone that we have a zero tolerance policy towards any form of abuse or discrimination, including tragedy chanting and condemn it in the strongest possible manner.”
