The Blues’ 3-1 victory over Halifax Town on Tuesday night extended their home midweek unbeaten streak this season.
However, in stark contrast, the Shrimpers have only won one of their nine Saturday league games at Roots Hall, something Maher admits he cannot understand.
“I honestly don’t know a reason for it if I’m honest, I think it’s just one of those things” responded Maher.
“I enjoy the night games at Roots Hall.
“The lighting and mood are always great.
“You can get low sun and stuff like that on a Saturday at Roots Hall, which makes it difficult for teams and supporters on the East side as well.
“But there’s no excuse, just go and win.”
The Shrimpers did just that against Halifax in the week.
And Maher remained determined to score more points.
“It’s important to keep winning and I hate losing as much as anyone,” commented Maher.
“After the weekend, it was good to have three points.
“It was maybe a good thing the game came so quickly and it was really good in terms of the result and I thought the performance was pretty good too against a team who are very good away from home.”
The victory took Blues to 11th position in the table, four points behind the play-offs and just one point behind eighth-placed Rochdale, who visit Roots Hall this weekend.
Rochdale has at least three games on all clubs above them, and Maher expects another tough test.
“They have a definitive style of play and they’re a really good footballing side,” replied Maher.
“We witnessed it at their location, and they have a lot of control over the games they play.
“They’re difficult to score against.
“They’re in a strong league position, and it will only become better if they catch up on their games in hand.
“They’ll be up, in and around it without a shadow of doubt.”
