Sunderland Pursue Premier League Midfielder to Replace Jobe Bellingham

Sunderland may soon be looking for a replacement for star midfielder Jobe Bellingham, and they have already found one, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

Crystal Palace, Arsenal, and Manchester United were all linked with the England U-20 international during the January transfer window, but Sunderland held on to their youngster.

Nixon previously reported that Jobe has gained the attention of England manager Thomas Tuchel, who is reportedly mulling a call-up for the younger brother of England striker Jude Bellingham.

Black Cats want Premier League midfielder

Nixon has stated: “Sunderland want Wolves midfielder Tommy Doyle as the long-term replacement for Jobe Bellingham.”

Despite Sunderland’s decision to keep their prize asset in January, Nixon claims, “They know a major bid is likely in the summer.”
Nixon also alleges Sheffield United, Sunderland’s promotion opponents, “sniffed at Doyle in the window but were snubbed.”

Doyle spent the 2022/23 season on loan at the Blades, appearing in 33 Championship games and scoring seven goals and assists.

A deal could be done in the summer

Nixon is optimistic: “The former Manchester City prospect’s future will be up in the air soon.”

Doyle signed a permanent contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer, following a successful loan spell at Molineux.

The former England Under-21 international signed for around £5 million after making 26 Premier League appearances for Wolves last season.

Doyle has only started three games for Wolves this season, totalling 19 Premier League appearances.

Wolves chose to keep Doyle in January despite interest since the Midlands club was in the midst of a relegation battle.

With 12 games to go, they are only two points above the drop zone.

Sunderland will want to maintain Jobe beyond this season, but failure to gain promotion to the Premier League will surely result in Jobe leaving the Black Cats in quest of Premier League football.

The 19-year-old midfielder has made 27 appearances for Sunderland this season, scoring four goals and assisting three others.

Jobe is on track to become the youngest player to reach 100 Championship appearances, despite missing Sunderland’s 2-2 draw with Watford on Saturday due to an ankle injury.
